Symrise has been following the guidelines of the Responsible Care Initiative since 1997 as a way of incorporating continuous improvement in the areas of safety, health and environmental protection, independent of – and even exceeding – legal requirements.
When it comes to labor conditions within the company, the standards that the UN dictates through the ILO (International Labour Organization) are as binding for us as the provisions of the SA 8000 (Social Accountability 8000) standard.
Good manufacturing practice serves as the global foundation for responsible products and production processes. By working with far-reaching internal regulations that exceed legal requirements, we guarantee the highest possible level of product quality for clients, consumers and the environment. In addition, we also maintain an integrated management system (IMS) that ensures compliance with quality and environmental standards such as ISO 9001 and 14001, and firmly anchors occupational safety and health protection into our business operations.
We go beyond the many regulations affecting the fragrance and flavorings industry, committing ourselves to still more standards through our participation in associations such as IFRA (International Fragrance Association) and IOFI (International Organization of the Flavor Industry).
Our participation in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and membership in the Supply Chain program ensures that we will measure our emissions using standardized, reproducible processes. We have been disclosing our data to the CDP every year since 2006, reporting our strategy and its goals, our current data on carbon dioxide emissions and energy usage (scope 1–3), as well as our opportunities and risks.
By registering with SEDEX, as nearly all Symrise sites now have, we are able to optimize transparency in the supply chain. We then make our data accessible to many clients, which, in turn, supports their own extended supply chains. In addition, in 2010 we began submitting those of our social audits as well. As part of this initiative, respected globally operating companies working on behalf of major clients audited our largest sites throughout the world, testing them for compliance with social standards.
We also subject our CSR progress and achievements to regular reviews by renowned rating agencies. These efforts allow us to target specific strengths and weaknesses and receive valuable feedback within the Symrise Sustainability Board to help us continuously improve our performance.
