Symrise launches SymSol® PF-3 – a PEG-free solubilizer

• Solubilizes lipophilic substances
• Suitable for many cosmetic applications including clear, transparent products
• Helps customers with PEG-free formulations

Symrise has launched its new PEG-free solubilizer SymSol® PF-3. Cosmetics manufacturers may use it to solubilize lipophilic substances, such as perfume and essential oils, actives and vitamins in pure aqueous and aqueous alcoholic product formulations. Main areas of application are cosmetic products including hair and body care as well as gels, wet wipes, after shaves and fragrances.

At the moment, PEG-containing products dominate the solubilizer market. They spread through all price segments. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) compounds have served as emulsifiers, solubilizers and surfactants in cosmetic preparations for many years. They show excellent emulsifying and solubilizing properties in a wide variety of products. However in the past years, the trend to PEG-free products is growing rapidly. By using Symrise’s PEG-free solubilizer variant customers will benefit from the advantages of SymSol® PF-3.

Yet, SymSol® PF-3 is more than just a PEG-free solubilizer. Cosmetics manu-facturers may use it for many kinds of fragrance, hair or body care application. One reason is that it allows a clear solution of oil soluble substances in pure aqueous and aqueous alcoholic product formulations. As a liquid product, it is also easy to handle because it is cold processable; it is colorless and clearly soluble in water, it does not exert influence on the color and odor in the final formulation, and leaves a pleasant skin feel. Moreover SymSol® PF-3 can be used as an emulsifier or co-emulsifier in O/W formulations.

Compared to its benchmark, PEG-containing products (i.e., PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil) and other PEG-free solubilizers, SymSol® PF-3 shows excellent solubilizing performance. In addition, it also excels against other PEG-free solubilizers in cost efficiency, color and odor. It is very effective and it is recommended to be used up to levels of 5% in rinse-off products and up to 3% in leave-on products.

To prove the efficacy of the new substance Symrise conducted numerous studies.  One comparison related to the PEG benchmark and another to other PEG-free solubilizers. Both tests inquire into the solubilization of essential oils and perfume oils. The first showed comparable overall performance, whereas the second proved better overall performance. To achieve this, the product combines anionic surfactants and Hydrolite® 5. The inclusion of Hydrolite® 5 ensures unique performance of the new product. Symrise has applied for patent protection for SymSol® PF-3.

“We have observed a trend towards PEG-free products for some time now. There are a number of customers who are no longer working with PEG-containing products and more have expressed a wish to have cost effective PEG-free alternatives. However, they are still rare to find in the market”, says Rolf Ohrmann, Global Product Manager Functionals at Symrise. “This is a great chance for SymSol® PF-3 because it combines both a PEG-free formulation and the performance of a standard PEG-containing product. It will grant our customers an advantage over other products because they can deliver reliable performance without the disadvantages of products containing PEG.”

Dr. William Johncock, Vice President of the Global Business Unit UV Protection and Functionals at Symrise adds: “We understand that the current trend is mainly heading towards PEG-free products. SymSol® PF-3 can actually help our customers formulate products which are an answer to consumer expectations. This will lead to more skin-friendly products which, on the other hand, underlines our competence in the solubilizer sector. We believe that SymSol® PF-3 is capable of setting a standard in the market for such products.”
