Taking a closer look at food colors

More than anything else, today’s consumers focus on buying things that are natural. One particularly delicate issue is the use of colors in foods and consumer goods such as cosmetics and drugs. All of these products have to appeal to the eye, since our world would be bland and dull without color. But at the same time, consumers expect things that look natural to be natural, too. The current trend towards more naturalness means that people are taking a closer look than ever at colors. And new legislation is also creating challenges for the industry: starting January 20, 2010, the EC regulation on food additives will be binding.
As a result of this regulation, after July 20, 2010 foods which contain certain artificial colors (including orange yellow, quinoline yellow and azorubine) have to be labeled with the warning “may have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children.”

Colors? But naturally!

With SymColor®, Symrise offers clients a modern palette of colors that are custom-tailored to sophisticated consumers. The SymColor® spectrum makes food look appetizing, fresh and unmistakable, giving your product that certain something. SymColor® colors emphasize each food’s flavor and character: a cherry-flavored wine gum can be a brilliantly tantalizing red. Bourbon vanilla ice cream has exactly the right subtle shade of yellow. And orange soda not only tastes of orange, it looks like it too. You can also use SymColor® to pep up colors which have faded during production. SymColor® lets you create the exact
colors consumers expect.

SymColor® features two kinds of products:
• SymColor® concentrated colors which occur in nature – authentic colors for delicious products.
• SymColor® colorant foods – all natural and labeling friendly.
