NEW MOLECULES

For Scent & Care products, Symrise is constantly developing new molecules, which are generated by using three different technologies: organic chemistry, plant extraction and biotechnology:

Organic Chemistry

In the synthesis department Symrise applies all relevant state-of-the-art technologies. The special expertise in cutting-edge technologies comprises microreactor techniques, photochemistry, olefin metathesis and multiple parallel syntheses. Molecular modeling helps to develop new fragrance molecules more efficiently.

To achieve a higher grade of sustainability and profitability, we are developing and optimizing our production processes according to the principles of “Green Chemistry,” placing particular emphasis on research and screening for new catalysts.

These activities are supported by collaborations with leading academic partners.

Plant extraction

Symrise gathers new sources for plant-based products from all around the globe. Hot spots such as Madagascar or Australia are of great interest, as are traditional sources in Western Europe or the USA. All activities comply fully with the “Convention of biological diversity (CBD)” and are undertaken in close collaboration with local partners.

The isolation and structure elucidation of new active principles from plants is the special competence of the analytical department. All relevant technologies for natural product extraction, pure ingredient isolation and structure elucidation are available there.

Biotechnology

“White Biotechnology” (i.e. the production of chemicals by microorganisms) is a valuable addition to the Scent & Care synthesis process portfolio. Symrise is currently engaged in two government-funded biotechnology projects on the production of fragrance raw materials from renewable resources. Scent & Care is also running independent projects with biotech companies.
