— Sustainable ingredients for fragrances and cosmetics from the socio-biodiversity of the Amazon

— Integrates and applies advanced principles of industrial ecology

— Supports communities in the Amazon region

In the fourth quarter of 2014, Symrise will open a site for research, development and the manufacturing of sustainable ingredients from the Amazon region. The Ecoparque, an industrial condominium, promotes and combines sustainability and the manufacturing of high-quality products. Enterprises from various market segments settle here to exchange resources and to come up with innovations. It will also benefit local communities and families.

The unique Amazonian biodiversity offers a rich source of raw materials for companies within the fragrance and cosmetics industry. The sustainable use of these resources is becoming ever more important to them. Natura Cosmetics understood this need and has opened the Ecoparque in Benevides in the state of Pará. Just recently, on March 12, 2014, it inaugurated its soap factory on the site.

Symrise is sharing this approach and will be joining the project in the fourth quarter of 2014. It will be the second company investing in this region. Within the facility, Symrise plans to explore, develop and manufacture high-quality products from indigenous resources. With its patented SymTrap® technology, Symrise will produce oils, butters and essential oils from raw materials such as the Brazil nut, murumuru, cupuaçú, cocoa, andiroba, buriti and passion fruit. They are suitable for use in cosmetic and fragrance products. In addition, Symrise will help to promote the economic and social development of communities and directly support more than 2,000 families from the Amazon region.

Ecoparque offers a holistic concept promoting and incorporating principles of ecological industrialization throughout the entire value chain. It puts a strong focus on environmental aspects. It uses garden filters to treat effluents, collects rain water, applies geothermal technology for air conditioning, and makes use of other sustainable processes.

“We were inspired by the compelling vision of the Ecoparque initiator and founder, Natura Cosmetics. They have started to realize a project which will allow companies to harvest the rich biodiversity of the Amazonas region in a sustainable way. At the same time, this will bring economic and social development to the region. This approach is very much in line with our strong commitment to sustainability as an embedded value in our business strategy and operating system,” says Achim Daub, Global President Scent & Care.
