Modern well-aging

Modern well-aging

In-depth research is the backbone for our comprehensive portfolio of anti-aging ingredients to provide the cosmetic industry with products that are highly effective and substantiated by clinical data

As naturalness and sustainability rank high in what the modern consumer expects today from a beauty product many of our anti-aging ingredients meet these criteria.

Our deep understanding of both the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that lead to skin-aging helps us develop the most effective solutions for a wide range of consumer concerns and products.

Intrinsic and extrinsic skin-aging factors

Biology

Biology

Our individual genetic makeup can affect the way our cells age: weaker metabolism and micro-circulation, slowing down of cell renewal and hormonal imbalances can influence the visible and the perceived signs of aging

Lifestyle

Lifestyle

The choices we make in the way we live our life can have an impact to varying degrees: from a poor diet and smoking/alcohol intake to a lack of sleep and exercise

The sun and other external factors

The sun and other external factors

Exposure to the sun and heat ages the skin, as do other environmental issues such as pollution, free radicals, water quality and radiation

Emotions

Emotions

Negative feelings, stress, anxiety and depression can all influence the way our skin ages

Our anti-aging range is built around five key areas

1. Antioxidants
2. Anti-wrinkle
3. Detoxification
4. Skin radiance
5. Skin regeneration

Skin protection against environmental pollution

Our elaborate solutions are protecting our skin from premature aging caused by increasing air pollution and damaging light rays

Air pollution (particulate matter)

Airborne particulate matter comes from many different sources: vehicular exhausts, industrial plants, cigarettes and domestic heating emissions are just some of the most common ones.

Consumers are increasingly concerned about the accelerated aging effects that particulate matter pollution can cause. Our diverse range of products offers innovative ingredient solutions for neutralizing their skin damaging effects: from our award-winning SymUrban® to our 100% natural and versatile skin beautifier SymVital® AR.

Infra-red, blue and UV light

The cosmetic industry has invested a lot of efforts in consumer education to make them aware of the harmful effects of sunlight on skin. The focus was initially on the harmful (cancer-causing) effects of UVB radiation (280-320 nm) and later also on UVA radiation (320-400 nm). However, since the 80’s, we know that the 280-400 nm portion of the light spectrum is not the only one to penetrate the skin and trigger undesirable reactions. Infrared rays (700 nm–1 mm), especially those of near infrared (IRA, 700–1400 nm) have been identified to cause heat and oxidative damages, contributing to wrinkle formation. More recently research has been focusing on the specific effects of blue light (400–480 nm) which can induce persistent hyper pigmentation.

Brightening and Bronzing

Brightening and bronzing

Human skin color ranges in variety from the darkest brown to the lightest hues. It is mainly affected by the individual amount of the skin-own pigment melanin

If there’s one universal truth it is, that we always want to look different or better than we do by nature. Thanks to modern cosmetic ingredients it has never been so easy for so many people to realize their beauty ideal – be it to safely look more fair and bright or to change the skin tone for a more tanned look.

Radiant and even skin tone

Skin brightening has come a long way from the basic ‘whitening’ approach once aimed at consumers predominantly from Asia and the Middle East. Rapidly becoming one of the most successful areas of beauty care, today’s consumers are looking for:

  • a healthy, illuminated skin glow
  • spot-targeting to reduce the appearance of brown/aging spots

We meet these increasingly sophisticated consumer needs with a range of inspiring ingredients tailored to multi-benefit products: our nature-inspired SymWhite® 377 and SymBright® 2036 products feature outstanding brighteners with additional benefits.

Safer and beautiful bronzing

Being tanned is still much regarded a symbol of a healthy and active lifestyle, making it a beauty goal for many. Consumers today want a ‘natural and healthy’ looking tan without the risks that prolonged exposure to the sun can potentially entail. The general consumer demand for natural products triggers also the need for natural tanners.

To address this demand, Symrise has launched the natural tanner SymBronze® 1659 a sustainably produced microalgae extract that increases skin pigmentation and accelerates the natural tanning process.

Oily skin

Oily skin is caused by over-active sebaceous glands, which produce an excess of sebum

When the skin produces excessive sebum, it becomes heavy and thick in texture. Oily skin is typified by shininess, blemishes and pimples and is especially susceptible to clogged pores, blackheads, and buildup of dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. Symrise has broadly investigated the phenomenon of oily skin and provides avant-garde ingredients to address the main concerns of oily skin consumers.

Soothing Sensitive Skin

Soothing
sensitive
skin

Sensitive skin is a growing concern amongst consumers that can have a high impact on quality of life

A substantial proportion of consumers claim to increasingly suffer from sensitive skin with the majority of consumers (68 % - based on Symrise CMI data) saying: “my skin is more sensitive than a few years ago”. As pollution, urbanization and an awareness of the sun’s damaging effects (amongst other concerns) continue to increase, the need for soothing care grows considerably.

Sensitive skin is a condition that can be defined by a number of unpleasant sensations, including tightness, stinging, burning, tingling and itching. Symptoms can also include erythema and flush or redness.

Sensitive skin can also refer to hyper-reactive skin, characterized by exaggerated sensorial reactions to environmental stressors such as UV radiation, topical irritants, such as hard water or mechanical factors like shaving or waxing. Soothing ingredients like SymCalmin®, SymSitive® 1609 or SymRelief® 100 help to quickly calm and relieve but also prevent sensitive skin in the long term.

Our soothing range is built around five key areas

  • Barrier strengthening
  • Anti-redness
  • Anti-itch
  • Anti-stinging / -burning
  • Holistic ready-made solutions

Skin Moisturization: a basic and essential need

Skin moisturization:
a basic and essential
need

‘Moisturizing’ is the top claim in skincare products, and the demand for effective solutions continues to grow – in 2017, 61% of new skincare products featured a moisturizing claim (Mintel data)

Why is skin moisturizing so important?

The skin is the protective barrier of the body, and one of its main functions is to regulate the body water evaporation. Many factors can have a negative impact on these functions and lead to skin dehydration.

  • cold or hot temperatures
  • wind
  • UV rays
  • not drinking enough water
  • dry or polluted air
  • contact with clothes
  • cleaning with hard water

Our diverse range of innovative, impactful ingredients ensures that our customers are able to offer the right moisturizing solutions for many different skin care needs and in the suitable product format.
