The skin microbiome’s role

An area of growing interest for the beauty and personal care industry is the natural skin microbiome. The interplay and relationship between the skin microbiome and UV filter has been of particular interest for Symrise.

Our skin is more than just a barrier - it's a bustling ecosystem full of bacteria, fungi and viruses, collectively known as the skin microbiome. This microscopic world is crucial to our health, acting as the first line of defense against invaders, influencing our immune system and even contributing to healthy skin.

As interest in the skin microbiome grows, so does the interest in its role in our everyday lives. One area of particular interest is sun protection. Symrise is researching the complex interplay between the skin microbiome and UV filters. Recent research suggests that this delicate ecosystem plays a crucial role in our skin's ability to withstand the sun's rays.

To better understand this relationship, Symrise conducted a groundbreaking study that mimics a typical vacation scenario – 14 days of sun exposure with daily use of sunscreens with different UV filter combinations.

The results show the natural skin microbiome remained healthy and undisturbed during the use of sunscreens. This finding is an important step towards developing sun protection solutions that not only protect our skin from harmful UV rays, but also preserve the delicate balance of our skin microbiome. A win-win situation for healthy, radiant skin!
